Mont-Saint Michel, Normandy

Mont St Michel is a small and unique site located on an island off the coast of the Lower Normandy region in northern France. Perched on a rock in the middle of a vast sandbank and exposed to powerful tides stands the “Wonder of the West”, a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael.

Surrounding the abbey stands a beautiful medieval village. Mont Saint Michel was officially inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1979. Since the sixth century hermit monks in search of solitude lived here. Around the Bay of Mont St Michel is polder land, a land covered by salt-loving plants and grazed by sheep whose salty meat is considered a local treat. The causeway was built in 1878 to allow pilgrims to come and go regardless of the tide.

To get there drive slowly on the causeway and park in the pay lot near the base of the island, this way you will make sure you will find it back even with high-tide conditions!
